Country Background

Democratic Transition

TJET records no democratic transitions in Angola between 1970 and 2020.

Violent Conflict

Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records 14 violent intrastate conflict episodes between 1975 and 2020 (during 36 calendar years), involving five distinct armed opposition groups fighting against the government. Three conflict episodes were internationalized by involvement of external state actors.

Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties

Angola had eleven amnesties between 1975 and 2006. Seven were passed during ongoing internal armed conflict. Three were passed after internal armed conflict. Three were part of a peace agreement. Six amnesties released political prisoners. Seven amnesties forgave human rights violations.

Domestic Trials

TJET has compiled data on twelve domestic prosecutions between 2006 and 2018. These include eleven regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which 13 persons were convicted; and one intrastate conflict prosecution of opposition members, in which no one was convicted.
