For Gambia, TJET has collected information on: four amnesties between 1989 and 2015; 16 domestic trials starting between 1981 and 2016; one foreign trial starting in 2020; and one truth commission mandated in 2018.

Country Background

Democratic Transition

Based on well-known democracy data, TJET records one democratic transition starting in 2017.

Violent Conflict

Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records one violent intrastate conflict episode in 1981, involving one armed opposition group fighting against the government. One conflict episode was internationalized by involvement of external state actors.

Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties

Gambia had four amnesties between 1989 and 2015. Two were passed after internal armed conflict. Three amnesties released political prisoners.

Domestic Trials

TJET has compiled data on 16 domestic prosecutions between 1981 and 2017. These include nine regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which nine persons were convicted; one intrastate conflict prosecution of opposition members, in which one person was convicted; and six opposition prosecutions of state agents or opposition members, in which 19 persons were convicted.

Foreign Trials

Nationals of Gambia were defendants in one foreign prosecution in United States of America beginning in 2020.

Truth Commissions

Gambia mandated one truth commission in 2018. The commission completed its operations in 2021. The commission issued a final report, which is publicly available. The report included recommendations for prosecutions, reparations, and institutional reforms.
