Country Background

Democratic Transition

Based on well-known democracy data, TJET records one democratic transition starting in 1994.

Violent Conflict

Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records five violent intrastate conflict episodes between 1977 and 2020 (during 22 calendar years), involving three distinct armed opposition groups fighting against the government. Two conflict episodes were internationalized by involvement of external state actors.

Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties

Mozambique had five amnesties between 1984 and 2019. Two were passed during ongoing internal armed conflict. Three were passed after internal armed conflict. Two were part of a peace agreement. Two amnesties forgave human rights violations.

Domestic Trials

TJET has compiled data on 21 domestic prosecutions between 1987 and 2020. These include 17 regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which 14 persons were convicted; three intrastate conflict prosecutions of opposition members, in which two persons were convicted; and one opposition prosecution of state agents or opposition members, in which no one was convicted.
