Country Background
Democratic Transition
Based on well-known democracy data, TJET records one democratic transition starting in 1980.

Violent Conflict
Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records three violent intrastate conflict episodes between 1973 and 1979, involving three distinct armed opposition groups fighting against the government. One conflict episode was internationalized by involvement of external state actors.

Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties
Zimbabwe had eight amnesties between 1979 and 2008. Three occurred in the context of democratic transition. Three were passed after internal armed conflict. Three were part of a peace agreement. Four amnesties released political prisoners. Six amnesties forgave human rights violations.

Domestic Trials
TJET has compiled data on 30 domestic prosecutions between 1990 and 2018. These include 29 regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which 23 persons were convicted; and two opposition prosecutions of state agents or opposition members, in which no one was convicted.

Reparations Policies
Zimbabwe mandated one reparations policy in 1980. According to available information, there was a total of 52400 individual beneficiaries.

Truth Commissions
Zimbabwe mandated four truth commissions in 1981, 1985, and 2018. Three completed their operations by 2018. Three of the commissions issued final reports, one of which is publicly available. The reports included recommendations for prosecutions, reparations, and institutional reforms.
