Country Background

Democratic Transition

Based on well-known democracy data, TJET records one democratic transition starting in 1984.

Violent Conflict

Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records two violent intrastate conflict episodes between 1977 and 1990 (during twelve calendar years), involving two distinct armed opposition groups fighting against the government.

Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties

Nicaragua had twelve amnesties between 1978 and 2019. Three occurred in the context of democratic transition. Four were passed during ongoing internal armed conflict. Three were passed after internal armed conflict. Two were part of a peace agreement. Six amnesties released political prisoners. Five amnesties forgave human rights violations.

Domestic Trials

TJET has compiled data on 41 domestic prosecutions between 1977 and 2020. These include two transitional human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which two persons were convicted; 29 regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which 27 persons were convicted; seven intrastate conflict prosecutions of state agents, in which five persons were convicted; and four intrastate conflict prosecutions of opposition members, in which four persons were convicted.

Truth Commissions

Nicaragua mandated one truth commission in 2018. The commission began its operations in 2018; TJET has found no evidence of completion.
