Country Background

Democratic Transition

Based on well-known democracy data, TJET records one democratic transition starting in 1988.

Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records one violent intrastate conflict episode in 1987, involving one armed opposition group fighting against the government.

Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties

Suriname had three amnesties between 1989 and 2012. One occurred in the context of democratic transition. Two were passed after internal armed conflict. One was part of a peace agreement. Two amnesties forgave human rights violations.

Domestic Trials

TJET has compiled data on twelve domestic prosecutions between 1987 and 2019. These include two transitional human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which two persons were convicted; ten regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which six persons were convicted; and one intrastate conflict prosecution of state agents, in which one person was convicted. In one trial that involved high-ranking state agents, one person was convicted.
