For China, TJET has collected information on: one amnesty in 1975; eleven domestic trials starting between 1986 and 2018; and seven foreign trials starting between 2002 and 2014.

Country Background

Democratic Transition

TJET records no democratic transitions in China between 1970 and 2020.

Violent Conflict

Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records one violent intrastate conflict episode in 2008, involving one armed opposition group fighting against the government.

Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties

China had one amnesty in 1975. One amnesty released political prisoners.

Domestic Trials

TJET has compiled data on eleven domestic prosecutions between 1986 and 2018. These include eleven regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which 23 persons were convicted.

Nationals of China were defendants in seven foreign prosecutions in Argentina, Mongolia, Spain, and the United States of America beginning between 2002 and 2014.
