Country Background

Democratic Transition

TJET records no democratic transitions in Uzbekistan between 1970 and 2020.

Violent Conflict

Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records two violent intrastate conflict episodes between 1999 and 2004 (during three calendar years), involving two distinct armed opposition groups fighting against the government. One conflict episode was internationalized by involvement of external state actors.

Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties

Uzbekistan had five amnesties between 1992 and 2003. One was passed after internal armed conflict. Four amnesties released political prisoners.

Domestic Trials

TJET has compiled data on 21 domestic prosecutions between 2000 and 2020. These include 18 regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which 29 persons were convicted; one intrastate conflict prosecution of state agents, in which one person was convicted; and two intrastate conflict prosecutions of opposition members, in which two persons were convicted.
