Democratic Transition

Based on well-known democracy data, TJET records two democratic transitions starting in 1990 and 1993.

Violent Conflict

Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records no episodes of violent intrastate conflict in Czechia between 1970 and 2020.


Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties

Czechia had five amnesties between 1973 and 1993. Two occurred in the context of democratic transition. Three amnesties released political prisoners.

Domestic Trials

TJET has compiled data on 26 domestic prosecutions between 1990 and 2010. These include 14 transitional human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which 13 persons were convicted; and twelve regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which ten persons were convicted. In four trials that involved high-ranking state agents, one person was convicted.

Reparations Policies

Czechia mandated one reparations policy in 1990. TJET found no information on the total number of beneficiaries. TJET found no evidence on implementation.

Vetting Policies

Czechia had two vetting policies, starting in 1991; one of these ended by 2002. One policy provided sanctions based on past individual conduct. One policy prescribed both dismissals from current employment and bans from holding future office. One policy aimed to declassify the records of former state security agents.
