Democratic Transition

Based on well-known democracy data, TJET records one democratic transition starting in 1992.

Violent Conflict

Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records eight violent intrastate conflict episodes between 1990 and 2020 (during 28 calendar years), involving seven distinct armed opposition groups fighting against the government.

Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties

Russian Federation had eight amnesties between 1987 and 2006. One occurred in the context of democratic transition. Three were passed during ongoing internal armed conflict. One was passed after internal armed conflict. One amnesty released political prisoners. Three amnesties forgave human rights violations.

Domestic Trials

TJET has compiled data on 59 domestic prosecutions between 1993 and 2020. These include 49 regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which 71 persons were convicted; eight intrastate conflict prosecutions of state agents, in which 19 persons were convicted; one intrastate conflict prosecution of opposition members, in which one person was convicted; and one opposition prosecution of state agents or opposition members, in which one person was convicted. In one trial that involved high-ranking state agents, two persons were convicted.

Foreign Trials

Nationals of Russian Federation were defendants in two foreign prosecutions in Latvia and the Netherlands beginning between 2001 and 2019.
