Country Background

Democratic Transition

TJET records no democratic transitions in Iran between 1970 and 2020.

Violent Conflict

Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records 20 violent intrastate conflict episodes between 1979 and 2020 (during 30 calendar years), involving seven distinct armed opposition groups fighting against the government.

Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties

Iran had 14 amnesties between 1978 and 2020. Four were passed during ongoing internal armed conflict. Nine amnesties released political prisoners.

Domestic Trials

TJET has compiled data on seven domestic prosecutions between 2001 and 2017. These include five regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which three persons were convicted; and two opposition prosecutions of state agents or opposition members, in which two persons were convicted.

Foreign Trials

Nationals of Iran were defendants in one foreign prosecution in Sweden beginning in 2019.
