Country Background

Democratic Transition

TJET records no democratic transitions in Israel between 1970 and 2020.

Violent Conflict

Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records 24 violent intrastate conflict episodes between 1970 and 2019 (during 46 calendar years), involving twelve distinct armed opposition groups fighting against the government. Two conflict episodes were internationalized by involvement of external state actors.

Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties

Israel had eleven amnesties between 1979 and 2013. Four were passed during ongoing internal armed conflict. Four were passed after internal armed conflict. Four were part of a peace agreement. Nine amnesties released political prisoners. Two amnesties forgave human rights violations.

Domestic Trials

TJET has compiled data on 32 domestic prosecutions between 1982 and 2019. These include 19 regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which twelve persons were convicted; ten intrastate conflict prosecutions of state agents, in which six persons were convicted; and one intrastate conflict prosecution of opposition members, in which one person was convicted. In two trials that involved high-ranking state agents, two persons were convicted.

Foreign Trials

Nationals of Israel were defendants in two foreign prosecutions in New Zealand and the United Kingdom beginning between 2005 and 2006.
