Democratic Transition

TJET records no democratic transitions in Yemen between 1970 and 2020.

Violent Conflict

Based on the Uppsala Conflict Data Program, TJET records eleven violent intrastate conflict episodes between 1970 and 2020 (during 19 calendar years), involving nine distinct armed opposition groups fighting against the government. Three conflict episodes were internationalized by involvement of external state actors.

Transitional Justice Data

Amnesties

Yemen had 13 amnesties between 1979 and 2012. Two were passed during ongoing internal armed conflict. Eight amnesties released political prisoners. Two amnesties forgave human rights violations.

Domestic Trials

TJET has compiled data on 16 domestic prosecutions between 1987 and 2020. These include ten regular human rights prosecutions of state agents, in which eight persons were convicted; three intrastate conflict prosecutions of state agents, in which eleven persons were convicted; and three intrastate conflict prosecutions of opposition members, in which eight persons were convicted. In three trials that involved high-ranking state agents, eleven persons were convicted.

UN Investigations

Yemen was subject to one UN investigation between 2017 and 2021. One investigation aimed to encourage domestic prosecutions.
