Ethiopia Peace & Justice Survey 2023
Abstract
This report presents the results of a large-scale survey conducted across Ethiopia between May and July 2023 to understand public perspectives on peace, security, justice and accountability efforts. A total of 6,689 adults were interviewed through a stratified multi-stage cluster sampling process across all regions and city administrations. The survey examined views on the root causes of conflicts, priorities for peace and security, the importance of various transitional justice mechanisms, awareness and satisfaction with current accountability efforts, expectations for punishment and reconciliation, as well as trust across groups and in institutions. Key findings include strong support for justice and accountability mechanisms but disagreement on temporal focus and venues, widespread trauma impacting views, ethnic and political divisions as main conflict drivers, and low trust across groups and in the government undermining optimism for peace and reconciliation.
